AISI/SAE Numbering System

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI)

The American Iron and Steel Institute is a North American association of steel producers. The association, similar to Unified Number Systems sets a standardized categorical numbering system for various types of metals and alloys. After 1995 the American Iron and Steel Institute discontinued their alliance as they never produced specifications. After that, it is now fully controlled by the Society of Automotive Engineers International.

Society of Automotive Engineers International (SAE)

Society of Automotive Engineers International is an American based engineering association, which worked along with the American Iron and Steel Institute to create an organized metal and alloy designation system. In 1995 the American Iron and Steel Institute removed their affiliation and the Society of Automotive Engineers International manages the designations. A four digit system is used, the two first digits consisting of the material type and the last two digits stating the carbon content.
