DIY: Volkswagen MKIV Dash Vent Removal

Tools/Supplies Needed:

• standard (flat) screwdriver
• electrical tape
• T20 torx screwdriver

Procedure:

• wrap electrical tape around the tip of the standard screwdriver, this will prevent the plastic from getting scratched by the screwdriver
• remove the driver and center movable vent diffuser by using a standard screwdriver
• insert the screwdriver along the edge of the diffuser and outer vent frame, then pry the diffuser out
• do not lose the rubber caps which pop onto the diffuser pivot points
• next remove the headlight switch by pushing the button in, then rotating clockwise, and pulling straight out
• disconnect the electrical connector on the headlight switch
• to remove the dimmer switch, using a standard screwdriver, slowly pry around the outer edge of the switch and work it out
• once removed, disconnect the electrical connector from the rear
• now remove the vent by pulling while wiggling out
• remove the two T20 torx screws from the driver side vent
• one screw is by the duct opening and the other is behind the headlight switch location
• once the screws have been removed, there is a tang in the headlight switch opening on the right top side which you maybe able to access with your finger and then pulling downward
• moving onto the center vent, remove the two T20 torx screws which were behind the vent diffusers
• switches can be removed before or after vent removal
• pull out vent assembly and disconnect any electrical connectors for the switches where necessary
• some vehicles are equipped with headed seats or traction control, but rear window defroster and hazard lights are standard
• switches in center vent assembly are easiest to be removed once the vent is remove, that way you can gain access from behind
• to remove the passenger vent, it is not required to remove the diffuser
• tilt the diffuser downward, grab onto it and then wiggle the vent and pull straight back
• installation in reverse

How to remove the Jetta/Bora center vent?

There are no torx screws behind the diffusers, therefore do not remove them. Carefully pry out the buttons using a standard screwdriver. This will allow for a grabbing point to help remove the vent. Then using a standard screwdriver or a trim tool, slowly work around the edge of the vent frame being careful not to scratch it and pry the vent out.

Will Jetta/Bora vents fit my Golf?

Yes they will, although you will have to wire in the illumination feature.
