DIY: BMW E23 Front Bumper Removal

Tools/Supplies Needed:

• phillips screwdriver
• 19mm 3/4" drive socket
• 10mm 3/8" drive socket
• 3/4" drive ratchet set
• 3/8" drive ratchet set
• standard/flat screw driver or nylon trim tool

Procedure:

• first start by removing your front license plate and then the metal bracket in behind the license plate which are held on with two phillips screws
• remove the four plastic clips on the center rubber piece around the license plate area, then pull straight out
• remove the black rubber strips on the front of the bumper to access the bolts in behind to remove the aluminum bumper assembly
• there are two 19mm nuts in behind the rubber trim
• once those 19mm nuts have been removed, the aluminum bumper assembly pulls straight off
• next remove the parking lights to gain access to the bolts in behind for the plastic bumper cover
• remove the nine 10mm bolts from the vehicle
• once all the bolts are removed, pull the bumper cover off to the end of the bumper shocks and disconnect the temperature sensor on the driver's side
• the bumper can now be fully removed the vehicle
• the orange bumper reflectors can be removed by depressing the tabs on the inside of the bumper directly behind the reflectors
• reassembly in reverse of disassembly

Video tutorial on how to remove the front American spec larger front aluminum bumper (non Euro spec) on a BMW E23. A similar procedure can most likely be applied to other BMW models from the same generation. As for removal of the European short profile bumper, some aspects might be the same while others will be different on the removal. This particular video was done on a 1984 BMW 733i.
