DIY: BMW E39 Trunk Shock Replacement

Difficulty Level

Tools/Supplies Needed:

• standard/flat screwdriver
• cloth
• adjustable wrench
• new trunk shocks (for the BMW E39 sedan, part number 51248222913)

Procedure:

• using a standard/flat screwdriver, remove the circlip on the trunk portion
• be careful when removing these as they can just pop off and you can risk the chance of losing it
• once removed, you can then slide off the pivot point and the trunk will stay in place as long as you replace one trunk shock at a time
• now onto the bottom portion, using a standard/flat screwdriver, pop the clip off
• now pop the bottom of the shock out of place, you may need to twist is a little to disengage it
• when installing the new shock, you may find the orientation of the pivot in the wrong place, therefore use the adjustable wrench to rotate the one side of the assembly
• clean both pivot points on the car
• there is no need for any lubrication as the shock pivot points come pre-lubricated from new
• snap the bottom port of the shock in place
• slide the upper portion unto place, you may need to open/close the trunk to help assist it into place
• pop the circlip back into place

Video tutorial on how to replace the trunk shocks on a BMW E39. Similar procedure most likely applies to other BMW models as well. This procedure is fairly straight forward and will fix the issue if your trunk no longer stays in the open position or closes on a windy day. Be sure to replace one at a time as this will keep the trunk is place and prevent it from falling down. This particular car I am working with here today is a 1997 BMW 540i sedan.
