Difficulty Level
Tools/Supplies Needed:
• gear clamps
• ramps or jack and jack/axle stands
• ratchet set and ratchet or screwdriver
• piece of wood or hammer
Procedure:
• first determine if the rattling occurs when the vehicle is cold or warm
• pull the vehicle on ramps or jack it up safely using jack/axle stands
• if the rattling occurs when the vehicle is cold, then we will need to find the source when the exhaust is cold
• if the rattling occurs when the vehicle is warm, then we will need to find the source when the exhaust is warm
• use a piece of wood or hammer handle to tap around the exhaust to determine where the loose heat shield or rattling is occurring
• once found, purchase the correct size gear clamps
• if the gear clamp isn't large enough, they can be connected together
• with the exhaust cold, wrap the gear clamp around the heat shield
• wrap it in such a way so the loose end doesn't hang down towards the ground which will reduce the risk of it catching on anything
• now tighten the gear clamp using a screwdriver or socket set and ratchet
• ensure the clamp does fit securely and the heat shield is tight
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
Why does the exhaust rattling only occur at certain engine rpms or at a certain temperature?
It only occurs at certain times due to the type of tone/frequency your exhaust note is producing or how the metal is expanding/contracting under certain temperatures.
How much will this repair cost?
This will depend on your local prices for gear clamps. In my situation this repair was done for under $10.
Does the heat shield come installed on new exhaust pipe?
If you are purchasing an OEM assembly, then yes. If you are having an aftermarket custom or pieced together system, then no. There are also heat shields located on certain components under the vehicle or fastened to the vehicle's floor, therefore it is not part of the new exhaust assembly and is a separate part that will need to be ordered.
