DIY: How to Sell a Vehicle Like a Professional

Difficulty Level

What helps sell a vehicle:

• good ad description
• good quality photos
• good exposure
• clean vehicle
• certified or emission tested if possible
• fixing any noticeable broken/faulty parts
• no warning lights

Things to include in an ad when selling a vehicle:

• year
• make
• model
• trim package (if applicable)
• transmission type (automatic, manual, semi-automatic, etc)
• engine type (number of cylinders, fuel type, litre or cubic inch, etc)
• drivetrain type (all-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive)
• body style (sedan, coupe, wagon, hatchback, extended cab, regular cab, quad cab, crew cab)
• mileage
• options/accessories (power windows, power locks, keyless entry, alarm, air conditioning, leather, climate control, sunroof, cruise control, heated seats, etc)
• what maintenance was done within the past year or 25000km/15000 miles
• are you able to provide those maintenance records as proof
• does it have a clean Carfax, Carproof, or any other vehicle accident documentation
• has it ever been painted or in an accident
• are you the original owner or how long have you owned it for
• has the engine or transmission been rebuilt and is there still a warranty available on either
• condition of the exterior and interior
• is the vehicle being sold certified or emission tested
• if it's a newer vehicle, does it still have a valid warranty
• include a price and are you negotiable on the price or considering trades

Searching for a price:

You can use various documentation which is printed by the government or other organizations or search and compare on local classifieds. I normally go with the local classifieds considering it is area specific, relevant with the current time, and also determines what my competition is. I search either a couple years newer and older, but relating to the exact same body style. You will have to compare the condition of other vehicles, mileage, option/trim packages, drivetrain type, engine size, and recent maintenance. Price your vehicle accordingly.

Exposure:

Post your vehicle on as many local free classified networks as possible. Remember the more people that you can get to view your ad, the greater chance you have in selling the vehicle. You can go off and pay a fee to post your vehicle, but from my experience I've always stuck with free postings.

Photos:

Take clear high quality photos of a clean vehicle, on a bright day, include all 4 sides of the vehicle, interior, trunk space, and engine bay.
