DIY: BMW E39 CD Changer Removal

Difficulty Level

Tools/Supplies Needed:

• 1/4" drive ratchet
• 10mm 1/4" drive socket

Procedure:

• first start by accessing the trunk and opening the hatch on the left side of the vehicle
• disconnect the battery
• remove the five 10mm bolts using a socket and ratchet
• pull the cd changer upwards and then lay on it's side to expose the underside
• disconnect the wires
• some electrical connects may vary depending if your car is equipped with DSP audio package or not
• installation in reverse of removal

If you are having issue with your cd changer, there is a possibility it can be repaired. In order to repair the system, it may required disassembly. This particular model of cd changer is also found on other BMW models as well and some can be interchanged. The removal process maybe slightly different for a touring/wagon version E39. This particular tutorial was done on a 1997 BMW 540i sedan equipped with the DSP audio package.
