DIY: BMW Toolkit Bolt Replacement

Difficulty Level

Tools/Supplies Needed:

• razor knife
• lighter
• standard/flat screwdriver
• bolt (part #71111179444)

Procedure:

• start by heating up the razor knife with the lighter and cut a small portion of the plastic retaining ring/washer toolbox bolt
• do not cut it off entirely, cut it so it's able to be bent down and the plastic bolt can be removed from the toolbox case
• bend the recently cut plastic piece down, feed it through the hole and unthread the plastic bolt
• next remove the broken portion of the plastic bolt from the threaded insert in the trunk lid
• heat up the razor knife with the light, cut a slot big enough for the standard screwdriver to fit in on the broken portion of the plastic bolt
• unscrew the broken portion of the plastic bolt
• install the new plastic retaining bolt into the toolbox case by threading it in clockwise

The main reasons why this plastic bolt breaks is either slamming or closing the trunk too hard, over tightening, and the plastic becoming brittle with age and finally breaking on its own.
